The foundation of our self image is first developed during childhood and continues throughout life. If you experience low self esteem, these earlier experiences and false messages simply overshadowed the true you.
A healthy self esteem is critical to your happiness and success. Avoid these three common mistake when building your self esteem
Building Your Self Esteem Mistake #1 – Not believing in yourself
You can’t raise your self esteem if you don’t believe in your unique gifts and talents.
What you should do instead: One of the first ways to believe in yourself is to reflect back on your success and accomplishments. Put them on a list and every morning review them to help build your self esteem.
You may find this a little challenging at first. For over a decade I didn’t acknowledge breaking the cycle of abuse as a big deal. When I finally said WOW, look at what I did. If I can survive the abuse and not doom future generations to the same treatment, I can do anything.
Don’t underestimate anything. Celebrate even the smallest of successes.
Building Your Self Esteem Mistake #2 – Keeping Negative People In Your Life
It makes it difficult to change negative messaging if stay around the people who keep repeating it.
What you should do instead: Low self esteem is passed down from generation to generation. Stop passing it down.
Choose to associate with people who believe you. They will be your support team and will encourage you. You’ll begin to feel much better about yourself then people who tear down your self esteem. Changing your friends may be difficult and even harder with family.
Building Your Self Esteem Mistake #3 – Quitting Too Soon
It took years to develop a low self esteem so it will take time to build your self esteem to a higher level.
What you should do instead. Keep adding accomplishments to your success list and keep making friends with those that support you. So don’t stop… keep at it… don’t beat yourself up.
Building your self esteem will eventually lead to your experiencing the success and happiness you deserve.
